Can book clubs reduce stigma?

In 2013, Sea Change founder Kate Cockrill designed an innovative study to explore whether reading and storysharing in book clubs can reduce abortion stigma.  Based on the positive findings from this experimental research, Sea Change launched the Untold Stories Project.
In Untold Stories, project participants read and discussed our book, Untold Stories: Life, Love, and Reproduction. Throughout our campaign (2014-2016) we conducted interviews with book group hosts and gathered pre/post surveys to assess change in participants. We found that many participants shared their own stories about sex and reproduction, often for the first time. We also found that people’s attitudes toward the most stigmatized experiences, like abortion, were more supportive and less judgmental after Untold Stories participation. Evaluating the project also led to new insights that shaped adaptations of the project, including a play, college curricula, and the development of Untold Stories: The Game.

How can abortion stigma innovators measure success?

Sea Change helps partners with the analysis, metrics and tools to evaluate programs aimed at reducing reproductive stigma. For the Abortion Conversation Project, we created a webinar to help them evaluate their support of artists and groups who create small projects to destigmatize abortion. Since then, our evaluation presentation has been a feature of their project support for every grantee.

Does virtual reality shift perceptions of clinic harassment?

  • Over the last several years, Sea Change has helped Planned Parenthood with a variety of projects, including designing an evaluation of their groundbreaking film “Across the Line,” a virtual reality experience about accessing abortion in America.
  • This included creating and validating the first-ever scale to measure attitudes towards anti-abortion harassment.

attitudinal measurement

To evaluate the impact of our Untold Stories Project, Sea Change administered pre- and post-participation surveys that measured attitude shift. The pre-survey compiled demographic information and asked respondents to rate their attitudes towards a variety of people and reproductive situations. The post survey repeated the scale and examined what personal experiences respondents talked about in their discussions, and what actions they’d like to take next to support culture change around reproduction. After participating in an Untold Stories reading group, many participants expressed more favorable views towards the people identified in the feelings thermometer.
As part of the process, participants shared their personal reproductive stories including experiences with birth control and pregnancy, and about a quarter noted they were sharing that experience for the first time. Through this process, it became clear that Untold Stories can prompt in-group disclosures of reproductive experiences and really effect change, measured by participants being accepting of others’ experiences.
