mission

The Sea Change Program is dedicated to transforming the culture of stigma around abortion and other stigmatized reproductive experiences. We conduct social science research and partner with organizations to identify, test, and share practices for reducing reproductive stigmas.

vision

The Sea Change Program envisions a world where all people are respected and their reproductive choices supported. We seek a culture where people can be open about their reproductive experiences and decisions without fearing negative reactions or discrimination and where reproductive health care policies reflect the needs of everyone.

When all people have a VOICE in their own reproductive choices that reflect visibility, openness, integration, connection, and empowerment, we will have succeeded.

For Sea Change, that VOICE looks like:

V
Visible

The spectrum of reproductive experiences are visible and supported in US culture.

O
Open

People can be open about experiences with abortion and other reproductive experiences without fearing negative reactions or discrimination.

I
Integrated

The spectrum of reproductive experiences are integrated into mainstream healthcare services and media coverage of healthcare issues and pro-active policy measures address everyone's well-being.

C
Connected

Reproductive experiences foster connection, bringing people together instead of driving them apart.

E
Empowered

People who have experienced reproductive stigma are empowered as leaders of culture change.

Changing the culture creates the potential for better health care and fair policies for everyone.

history

Since 2013, Sea Change has been a pioneer in the field of reproductive health and stigma research. Reproductive stigma has always been a major barrier to creating better reproductive health policies. We founded the Sea Change Program to address that barrier.

Thankfully, we are beginning to see cracks in the pervasive stigma around certain reproductive experiences.

Sea Change analyzes these cultural, scientific and demographic trends to identify where we still need change. We use research, design, and training to shift the cultural conversation around reproductive experiences, so that the needs of all people are addressed. We are proud of the work we’ve done with our partners so far, and look forward to what’s next.

funders

Each of us deserves to have access to reproductive health services when we need them. Yet too often, stigma, shame, judgment and unnecessary controversy are what lead public policy and shape reproductive health care options.

Our funders agree, and we are supported by foundations, organizations and people who understand and support our mission. We couldn’t be more grateful for our current supporters who include:
